    Texas Hill Country Ranch Town

    Listings in Mountain Home, TX

Welcome to Mountain Home, a small Kerr County ranching community in the Texas Hill Country, home of the famed Y.O. Ranch and a cluster of rural camps and research stations.

Mountain Home is a small unincorporated community in Kerr County, Texas, set in the northwestern part of the county in the Texas Hill Country. Ranching has always been the community's principal business, and the surrounding land is blanketed with working ranches that give the area its economic and social character. The community was briefly known as Eura in the early 20th century before taking its present name. Mountain Home is best known as the location of the Y.O. Ranch, an authentic 19th-century working ranch that houses a variety of exotic animals and draws visitors from across the country. The community is also home to a cluster of rural institutions, including the Texas Catholic Boys Camp, established by the Society of Mary in 1951; the Texas Fisheries Research Station; and the Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting. Mountain Home's population has always been small — about 150 residents in 1946, and roughly 60 people within a one-mile radius of the post office by the 1980s, with that post office serving some 350 area families. The community has long included a store, a motel, and a church, serving the ranches and camps scattered across the surrounding Hill Country. The community's unincorporated status and its setting among the hills, creeks, and ranchlands of Kerr County keep it a quiet, spread-out place. Life here revolves around ranching, hunting, summer camps, and the outdoors, with residents drawing on nearby towns such as Kerrville and Hunt for schools, shopping, and services. The Hill Country's scenic terrain — its limestone hills, springs, and wildlife — frames Mountain Home's identity, and the area's long ranching tradition continues to shape how the land is used and how the community lives.

    City Guide

    About Mountain Home

    Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Mountain Home consists almost entirely of ranch properties and scattered homesites on large acreage across the Hill Country. There are no formal subdivisions; instead, the community's homes sit among working ranches, hunting tracts, and open rangeland. The setting produces an extremely low-density, rural pattern, with properties valued for their land, water, and wildlife as much as for any structure.

    Neighborhoods

Mountain Home has no formal neighborhoods; the community gathers around the post office, store, motel, and church near the road junction, then spreads across miles of ranchland. The Y.O. Ranch, the camps, and the research station are the area's principal institutions, scattered across the countryside. The community's geography is defined by the ranches and hills of northwestern Kerr County rather than by residential streets.

    Lifestyle in Mountain Home

Life in Mountain Home centers on ranching, hunting, and the outdoors. The Y.O. Ranch brings visitors drawn to its exotic game and western heritage, while the summer camps and the Cowboy Camp Meeting mark the community's seasonal rhythms. Residents value the quiet, wide-open setting and the ranching way of life, drawing on nearby Kerrville, Hunt, and Ingram for schools, shopping, and services.

The community's rural roads wind through ranch country, and its position in the Hill Country places it within reach of the recreational areas around the Guadalupe River and the region's state parks.

    Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Mountain Home is tied to the land: hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and ranch life dominate. The Y.O. Ranch's exotic game and working-ranch heritage are a regional draw, and the Texas Catholic Boys Camp and Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting bring seasonal activity. The surrounding Hill Country offers creek access, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives through northwestern Kerr County.
